Deadspin Editor Misses Boss’ Memo
When Deadspin is writing about sports, it is hardly matched. When Deadspin goes off its mandate and decides to cover the media, always from a position of self-righteous indignation, there are few worse.
The latest? After Fox ran a particularly heavy weekend of tie-in ads (during football) for James Cameron’s yiff porn film Avatar, Deadspin accused Fox of being “shameless corporate whores,” especially calling them out for “crappy product placement (for crappy products.)” Aparently, Dashiell Bennett isn’t familiar with his organization’s own history with crappy product placements. As for ad whoring, does Deadspin think that we aren’t noticing the way the “#advertisement” tag above sponsored posts, once a clearly different color, is getting closer and closer to the same color as the tag above editorial posts? (On Fleshbot they are already the same color).

Also, Bennett winds up his hypocritical indignation: “By the way, funny how the trailer listed James Cameron’s previous sci-fi triumphs, but forgot to mention ‘The Abyss.’”
In his rush to slam Fox, he may have missed the fact that The Abyss is a tremendously well-regarded film, boasting a 7.5 out if 10 on IMDB and an 85 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Oh yeah, it was nominated for four Oscars, won one.
